WHAT:
SPRING 2009

WHERE:
Milk Studios — New York, NY

WHO:
Creative Direction: LIPMAN
Photography: Patrick Demarchelier
Styling: Camilla Nickerson
Model[s]: Eva Herzigova

We loved what happened with a little movement in Fall 2008 so movement was the key element of our Spring 2009 ad campaign. To achieve these gravity-free shots, our model would have to fall gracefully and safely. We worked with an Alvin Ailey choreographer to get the moves perfect and he also was on-hand to help catch the model.

FALL 2008

WHERE:
Milk Studios — New York, NY

WHO:
Creative Direction: LIPMAN
Photography: Patrick Demarchelier
Styling: Charlotte Stockdale
Model[s]: Tanya Dziahileva, Nicole Trunfio, Serafima Vakulenko

For the Fall 2008 ad campaign we played with the idea of movement, hence the blurred elements. Our original concept for this editorial also had the models in matching wigs, but it looked like Pulp Fiction gone wrong, so the sleek hair proved to be a much better option.

Model[s]: Karen Elson

The chic pinups of the 1940’s served as inspiration behind the Spring 2008 ad campaign, which was all about seduction but not in an obvious way. The model Karen Elson was in the best shape of her life, you wouldn’t have known she had kids—or that she gave birth not long before the shoot.

Although BCBG creative director Lubov Azria thought the Spring 2007 ad campaign was too surreal at first, it was that part she loved the most in the end. There was a lot of post-production on this campaign, which accentuated the graphic surreal nature of the mood.

Model[s]: Jessica Stam, Rosie Huntington-Whiteley, Natalia Halicka

The thing about David Lipman, he walks you through an entire story in his ad campaigns—it’s practically a film. The Fall 2006 story was mysterious, and the trick to that was lighting from behind. There was something so chic about this grunge girl. Although, in the end, a lot of the shots were too dark and hard to use.

Inspired by Andy Warhol’s factory, the Fall 2005 ad campaign took on a slightly provocative approach—Jessica Stam was lying naked with a male model’s head between her legs. We wanted to push the envelope for an American brand with this campaign. That said, this shot ended up only being used in Europe. Warhol’s film, Factory Girls, premiered shortly after.

Music was the defining mood for the Spring 2005 ad campaign. Lead band girl, Jessica Stam, embodies a rockstar and the mix of art used in the images was a very new and exciting direction for BCBG. This was the first time we used male models and the first of many shoots with Jessica—we loved her.

The whole idea behind the Fall 2004 ad campaign was playing with color on a black yet bright set that give the mood of this campaign such an elitist contrast to the simplicity of the poses.
